What is a Kanban board?
A Kanban board shows work as cards moving left to right across columns that represent the stages of your process. It makes the state of every piece of work visible at a glance and shows where work is piling up. Orangescrum lets you define your own columns, filter what you see, and limit how much work sits in progress at once.
Why status meetings take so long
Boards that match how you work
01Columns
Your own statuses
Every column is a status you created, in your colour, so the board is your process rather than To Do, Doing, Done.
Drag to change status
Move a card to another column and the status is written immediately for everyone.
Drag to reorder
Cards keep their own order inside a column, so the top of a column is what the team picks up next.
Add one from the board
Create a status without leaving the board, giving it a name, a type, a progress value, and a colour.
02Cards
Detail without opening
Type, key, title, labels, priority, story points, estimate, due date, assignee, and comment count all sit on the card.
Choose the density
Switch between a roomy card and a compact one so more of the board fits on screen.
03Views
Board, list, or timeline
The same work reads as a board, a sortable list, or a timeline, without moving anything.
Swimlanes
Turn the columns into a grid by adding lanes for epic, assignee, or sprint.
Collapse a lane
Fold the lanes you are not working in, or open one on its own, and the choice is remembered.
Group the board
Group by nothing, by workflow status, by epic, or by assignee, depending on what you are looking for.
One board for every project
See work from every project you have access to on a single board. Available in Self-Hosted.
04Filters
Nine dimensions
Filter by assignee, epic, type, status, priority, due date, start date, last update, and a quick filter.
Starred, mine, unassigned
One click narrows the board to your own work, to starred work, or to everything with no owner.
Options that cascade
Each filter only offers values that the other filters would actually return, so you cannot filter to an empty board.
Search and saved views
Search cards by text, and save a filter set as a named view for the whole team.
Filter by person
A row of team cards shows each member's To Do, In Progress, and Done counts, and clicking one filters the board.
05Limits
A minimum and a maximum
Set the fewest and the most cards a column should hold, and the header shows the count against the cap. Available in Self-Hosted.
Warn or block
Choose soft enforcement, which highlights a full column, or hard, which refuses the move. Available in Self-Hosted.
A day limit per status
Give a status a maximum age so cards cannot sit there quietly forever. Available in Self-Hosted.
Flag or move stale cards
When a card passes its age limit, flag it or move it automatically to a status you nominate. Available in Self-Hosted.
06Working
Act on several cards
Select cards and set a status, move them to a sprint, reassign, archive, or delete in one action.
Switch sprints on the board
Choose which sprints the board shows, with a card count next to each, or stay on the active one.
The card is the real task
Cards are tasks, so a move on the board updates estimates, time logs, comments, and reports at the same time.
Unlimited users
Put the whole team, and your clients, on the board without paying per person.

Kanban board FAQ
Does Orangescrum have Kanban boards?
Yes. Orangescrum includes drag and drop Kanban boards with custom workflow columns, filters, and grouping. Boards are available in every edition, including the free Community Edition.
Can I create my own columns?
Yes. Every column is a status you created, with its own name, colour, type, and progress value, and you can add one straight from the board without going into settings.
What are work in progress limits?
A work in progress limit caps how many cards can sit in a column at once. You can also set a minimum. Choose soft enforcement, which highlights a column that is full, or hard, which refuses the move. Work in progress limits are available in the Self-Hosted edition.
Can the board tell me a card has gone stale?
Yes, in the Self-Hosted edition. Give a status a maximum age in days and any card that overstays is flagged, or moved automatically to a status you nominate.
Can I add swimlanes?
Yes. The board can be split into lanes by epic, by assignee, or by sprint, and you can collapse the lanes you are not working in or open one on its own. Swimlanes are in the Cloud and Self-Hosted editions.
Can I use Kanban and Scrum together?
Yes. Orangescrum supports Kanban on its own, Scrum with sprints and backlogs, or both at once, with a Gantt view over the top for stakeholders.
Can I see work from several projects on one board?
Yes, in the Self-Hosted edition there is a cross project board that shows work from every project you have access to in a single view.
Is the Kanban board free?
Kanban boards are included in the free Community Edition, and in every paid Cloud plan and the Self-Hosted edition.
How many people can use the board?
As many as you like. Every Orangescrum plan includes unlimited users, so cost does not go up as more of your team joins the board.
Can I filter the board?
Yes. Filter by assignee, epic, type, status, priority, due date, start date, and last update, or use a quick filter for your own work, starred work, or unassigned work. Options cascade, so a filter only offers values that will return cards, and a filter set can be saved as a named view.
Can I change several cards at once?
Yes. Select cards and set a status, move them to a sprint, reassign them, archive them, or delete them in a single action.
Does moving a card update anything else?
Yes. Cards are your real tasks, not copies, so a move on the board updates the task's status, its history, and every report that counts it.
