IT and Software

IT Project Management from Backlog to Release

Sprints, defects, test cases, and releases in one place, so the plan, the QA queue, and the build are not three separate systems nobody reconciles.

What is IT project management software?

IT teams never run one kind of work. There is a delivery plan, a sprint backlog, a defect queue, a test cycle, and a release that has to be coordinated with everyone else. Software for this has to hold all of it with one history and one set of reports, otherwise the team spends its week reconciling tools instead of shipping. Orangescrum covers planning, sprints, defects, test cases, and releases, and connects to your build pipeline in the Self-Hosted edition.

The problem

Why IT delivery drifts

The plan and the sprint disagree
The roadmap says one thing, the sprint board says another, and nobody trusts either in a status meeting.
Sprints built from the same backlog the plan is built from.
Defects live somewhere else
A bug is raised in a separate tracker with no link to the story that introduced it, so nothing can be traced.
Defect tracking attached to the work item.
Test evidence sits in spreadsheets
Test cases and results in files that cannot be reported on and go stale after one release.
Test cases, scenarios, and runs held with the project.
Release day runs on memory
The cut list is assembled the night before from a chat thread and whoever is still awake.
Releases with the work items and builds attached. Self-Hosted.
What matters here

Everything a delivery team already tracks

  • Sprints and backlog

Pull work from a backlog into a sprint, run it on a board, and track burndown against it. Pro and above in Cloud.

  • Defect tracking

Raise a defect against the work that caused it, with severity, status, and a full history.

  • Test case management

Test cases, scenarios, and runs kept with the project. Premium in Cloud, included in Self-Hosted.

  • Releases and CI/CD

Release management with a Jenkins connection, so a build result lands against the work. Self-Hosted.

  • API and MCP

A REST Partner API, plus an MCP server so an AI assistant can read and update work items.

  • Your own infrastructure

The Self-Hosted edition runs inside your network, with SSO, OAuth, LDAP, and Active Directory sign in.

How it works

How a delivery cycle runs

1
Shape the backlog
Epics, stories, and defects in one backlog with real owners and prioritised order.
2
Run the sprint
Pull work into a sprint, work it on the board, and watch burndown rather than guessing.
3
Test and fix
Test cases run against the build, and failures become defects linked to the original work.
4
Ship it
Group the work into a release, with the build pipeline attached in Self-Hosted.

Frequently asked questions

IT project management FAQ

Does Orangescrum support Scrum and sprints?

Yes. You keep a backlog, pull work into a sprint, run it on a board, and track burndown against the sprint. Sprints and the agile framework are on Pro and above in Cloud, and included in the Self-Hosted edition.

Can we link defects to the work that caused them?

Yes. A defect is raised against the story or task it came from, with severity, status, and a permanent history. That link is what makes a release note or a root cause review possible later without archaeology.

Does it connect to our CI pipeline?

There is a Jenkins integration in the Self-Hosted edition, so build results land against the work items in a release. This is Self-Hosted only. If you are on Cloud, you would use the Partner API to push build status yourself.

Is there an API, and does it work with AI tools?

Yes. There is a REST Partner API for reading and writing projects, tasks, and time, and an MCP server so an assistant like Claude can work with your Orangescrum data directly. Note that the AI features built into the product itself are Cloud only.

Do we pay per developer?

No. Pricing is a flat monthly plan with unlimited users: Basic at 29 dollars, Pro at 69 dollars, and Premium at 349 dollars per month. That matters for IT because QA, support, and stakeholders can all be in the tool without a license argument.

Can we customise the workflow?

Custom task statuses are in every edition, including the free Community Edition. The Self-Hosted edition adds a visual workflow designer where you define transitions, rules, and who is permitted to make each move.

Does Orangescrum replace source control or an ITSM suite?

No, and it is better to say so now. There is no git hosting, no CMDB or asset management, no incident management with SLAs, and no CRM. Orangescrum is the project, sprint, defect, test, and release layer that sits alongside those.

Can we run it entirely on our own servers?

Yes. The Self-Hosted edition installs on your own infrastructure or a private cloud, with SSO, OAuth, LDAP, and Active Directory sign in. It also includes the features that are Pro or Premium in Cloud, along with release management and the Jenkins integration.
