# Cost-Efficient Task Sequencing, _Explained Properly_

The order you do work in changes what it costs, sometimes more than how fast people work. Here is how to think about sequence, and what Orangescrum gives you to manage it.

## What is cost-efficient task sequencing?

Cost-efficient task sequencing means ordering the work in a project so that the total cost of delivering it is as low as it reasonably can be, rather than just finishing as early as possible. Cost here is mostly people waiting: an expensive specialist idle because a dependency is late, a team redoing work because a decision came after they started, or a contractor held on site longer than necessary. Sequencing well means putting the decisions and dependencies that unblock expensive work as early as you can.

## Where sequence _quietly costs money_

-   **Expensive people wait on cheap decisions**A senior engineer or a specialist contractor sits idle because an approval, a spec, or an environment was not ready. The delay is short, the cost is not.
-   **Work starts before it is settled**A task begins while its inputs are still changing, so some of it is thrown away. Rework is the most expensive kind of work because you pay for it twice.
-   **Everything is scheduled in parallel**Running work concurrently looks faster on a plan, but if the same people are on several of those tracks the plan was never real, and the overrun shows up late.
-   **Nobody knows what a delay actually costs**Without cost attached to the work, a slip is discussed as a date problem rather than a money problem, so the wrong things get prioritised.

## How to _sequence work deliberately_

1.  **Write down the real dependencies**Not the habitual order, the genuine one. Ask of each task what actually has to be true before it can start. Most plans contain sequence that is convention rather than constraint.
2.  **Find the expensive resources**Identify the people or assets whose idle time costs most. Those are the ones the sequence should be built around, because their waiting dominates the bill.
3.  **Pull decisions and unblockers forward**Anything that unblocks expensive work should happen as early as it can, even if it feels low priority. Approvals, environments, and specs are the usual culprits.
4.  **Check the parallel tracks are really parallel**Look at who is assigned. Two tracks that share a person are sequential whether the plan says so or not.
5.  **Track cost as you go, and review after**Compare planned against actual cost so the next project inherits a real lesson rather than an opinion.

## What Orangescrum does not do here

Orangescrum does not compute an optimal sequence for you. There is no scheduling solver, no constraint optimiser, and no algorithm that reorders your project to minimise cost. What it does is make the inputs visible: the dependencies, the critical path, who is committed to what, and what the work is costing. The judgement about sequence stays with your planner. If you need true mathematical optimisation across a large constraint set, that is specialist scheduling software and you would run it alongside us.

## Cost-efficient task sequencing <em>FAQ</em>

Does Orangescrum automatically sequence tasks to reduce cost?

No. Orangescrum has no scheduling solver or cost optimisation algorithm. It shows you dependencies, critical path, workload, and cost so a planner can make good sequencing decisions, but the decision is yours. We would rather be clear about that than let you discover it during a trial.

What is the difference between the fastest and the cheapest sequence?

The fastest sequence finishes soonest, often by running work in parallel and accepting idle time and rework. The cheapest sequence minimises wasted effort, which sometimes means finishing later. Which you want depends on whether the deadline or the budget is the harder constraint, and it is worth deciding that explicitly.

How do I know which delays cost the most?

Two things together. Critical path tells you which slips move the end date, and cost tracking tells you what the people involved cost. A delay to expensive work on the critical path is the one to fight; a delay to cheap work with slack usually is not.

Which plan do I need for this?

Dependencies and the Gantt chart are available in the Cloud and Self-Hosted editions. Critical path is on the Cloud Premium plan and included in Self-Hosted. Budget and cost tracking is on Cloud Pro and above and in Self-Hosted.

Can I model two different sequences and compare them?

Not as a formal side by side comparison, no. You can reschedule on the Gantt chart and see the knock on effect immediately, which is enough for most teams comparing a couple of options, but there is no scenario modelling feature.

Does rework show up anywhere?

Not as a distinct metric. What you can see is time logged against a task compared with its estimate, and planned against actual at project level. Teams that care about rework usually add a custom field or a status to mark it, then report on that.

Is this the same as critical path method?

No, though they are related. Critical path finds the chain that determines your end date, which is about time. Cost-efficient sequencing is about the order that wastes the least money, which often means protecting expensive resources rather than protecting the end date.
