Install it

## Two ways to _run it_

Docker is the recommended path and needs nothing on the host but Docker itself. If you would rather run it on your own stack, install it manually.

One command brings up the app, PostgreSQL 16 and the web server. Nothing else needed on the host.

Frequently asked questions

## Open Source Edition _FAQ_

What is Orangescrum Community Edition?

Orangescrum Community Edition is free, open-source project management software released under the GNU AGPL v3 license. You download the source code and self-host it on your own infrastructure - with projects, tasks, Kanban boards, time logs, documents, and role-based access for your whole team, and no data ever leaving your servers.

Is Orangescrum Community Edition really free?

Yes. The Community Edition is free and open source under the GNU AGPL v3 license - download it, self-host it, and run it at no cost. You own your data and your deployment, and we don't impose seat limits on your install.

What license is the Community Edition released under?

It is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL-3.0). AGPL is a strong copyleft license: you are free to use, modify, and distribute it, but if you run a modified version as a network service you must make your source changes available under the same license. See the LICENSE file in the repository for the exact terms.

How is the Community Edition different from Orangescrum Cloud and Self-Hosted Enterprise?

The Community Edition is the free, open-source, self-managed core you install and maintain yourself. Orangescrum Cloud is the fully managed SaaS, and Self-Hosted Enterprise is the commercial on-premise edition with additional modules, built-in AI, SSO, and dedicated support. Choose Community if you want full control and don't need managed hosting or enterprise add-ons.

Which platforms can I install it on?

There are two documented paths. Docker is recommended and runs the same image on Windows, macOS, and Linux - you only need Docker Desktop, or Docker Engine with the Compose plugin on a server. Alternatively you can install manually on your own stack with PHP 8.2, PostgreSQL 16, Composer 2, and Apache or Nginx.

What are the system requirements?

With Docker, only Docker itself - PHP, PostgreSQL 16, and the web server all run inside containers. For a manual install you need PHP 8.2 or newer with the pdo, pdo\_pgsql, openssl, mbstring, tokenizer, intl, json, xml, ctype, curl, gd, and zip extensions, PostgreSQL 16, Composer 2, and Apache or Nginx serving the webroot directory. Node.js 18+ is only needed if you rebuild the front-end bundles.

Which version is available and how do I install it?

The current Community Edition release is version 0.1.0. Clone the repository, run "docker compose up -d --build", then open http://localhost:8080 and follow the setup wizard - system check, database, mail, and creating your admin account. There is no license key and no user limit.

Is there a desktop app?

Yes. A Windows desktop client ships in the desktop folder of the repository. It connects to your own server - install it on each team member's machine and enter the server address once.

Can I use the Community Edition commercially?

Yes, subject to the AGPL v3 terms. You can run it for your business; if you modify it and provide it to others over a network, AGPL requires you to share those modifications under the same license. If you'd rather not take on copyleft obligations, the Cloud or Enterprise editions are commercially licensed. Consult the LICENSE file or your legal team for specifics.

Do I get support with the Community Edition?

Community support is available through GitHub Issues, the getting-started documentation, and support@orangescrum.com. Chat channels are coming soon. Guaranteed response times, onboarding, and dedicated support come with the Cloud and Enterprise editions.

How do I contribute to the project?

Star the repository, open issues, submit pull requests, improve the docs, or help with translations. See the CONTRIBUTING guide and Code of Conduct in the repository to get started.

How do I upgrade, and how do I back up my data?

To update a Docker install, run "docker compose pull" followed by "docker compose up -d". Your data lives in Docker volumes and survives stop, start, and update. Back up with "docker compose exec orangescrum-postgres pg\_dump -U orangescrum orangescrum > backup.sql", and always back up before upgrading.

Is my data private with the Community Edition?

Yes. Because you self-host, all your project data stays on your own infrastructure and nothing is sent to Orangescrum. You control backups, access, and where it runs, including fully air-gapped environments.
