## The short answer

Jira is a serious tool and the most capable issue tracker most engineering teams will ever use. Teams leave it for three reasons: the per seat cost stops them inviting everyone who should be involved, it takes real administration to keep working well, and Data Center is winding down, which removes the on-premise option a lot of them chose it for. If those are your reasons, Orangescrum covers the agile ground at a flat price with a self-hosted edition that is not being retired. If they are not, stay on Jira.

## When Jira is _the better choice_

We would rather you find this out here than three weeks into a trial.

- **You live in the Atlassian ecosystem**If Confluence, Bitbucket, and Jira Service Management are load bearing for you, the integration between them is genuinely tight and we do not match it. Replacing one piece of that means unpicking the rest.
- **You need very deep issue customisation**Jira's field, screen, and workflow scheme model goes further than ours. If you have built something intricate over years and it is working, moving it will cost you more than it saves.
- **You depend on specific Marketplace apps**The Atlassian Marketplace is the largest in this category. If your process runs on a particular app with no equivalent elsewhere, that is a real dependency and worth respecting.
- **You are a very small team on the free plan**Jira is free forever for up to 10 users. If you are under that and expect to stay there, free is hard to beat, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

## Why teams move from _Jira_

### The bill stops scaling with headcount

One flat monthly price for the whole team instead of a rate per person. The cost of adding someone is nothing, which changes who gets invited.

### Everyone can be in the tool

Unlimited users on every plan means stakeholders, clients, and contractors are inside the workflow rather than being emailed screenshots of it.

### Self-hosted that is not ending

Atlassian closed Data Center to new customers in March 2026 and sets end of life at March 2029. Our self-hosted edition is a current product we are still shipping modules to.

### Less to administer

Custom statuses, fields, and workflows without needing a dedicated administrator to keep schemes coherent.

### One tool, not four

Time tracking, budget and cost, invoicing, documents, and resource planning are in the same product rather than bought separately.

### Migration is done for you

Our team maps and moves projects, tasks, users, sprints, custom fields, and comment history, and validates it with you before cutover.

## Orangescrum compared with _Jira_

Jira figures were read from [their pricing page](https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/pricing) on 2026-08-03. Prices change, so check before you decide.

## What it costs _as the team grows_

Jira Standard at $9.05 per user per month on monthly billing, against Orangescrum Pro Unlimited at $69 per month for the whole team.

| Team size | Jira | Orangescrum | Difference per year |

| 10 people | $91_/mo_ | $69_/mo_ | $258 less |
| 25 people | $226_/mo_ | $69_/mo_ | $1,887 less |
| 50 people | $453_/mo_ | $69_/mo_ | $4,602 less |
| 100 people | $905_/mo_ | $69_/mo_ | $10,032 less |

Figures use Jira's published monthly billing rate for its Standard plan and assume every person needs a seat. Annual billing is cheaper on most tools, including theirs. This compares list prices, not negotiated ones.

## Moving off Jira

Migration is the part everyone is worried about, so we do it rather than hand you an importer and wish you luck. There is no charge for it.

1. **Tell us what you have**Number of projects, roughly how many issues, which custom fields matter, and whether sprint history needs to come across.
2. **We map it**Issue types, statuses, custom fields, and users are mapped to Orangescrum, and we show you the mapping before anything moves.
3. **Trial run**We import into a sandbox so your team can check that the data landed the way they expected.
4. **Cutover**The real import runs, we validate it with you, and your team starts working. Jira stays available read-only for as long as you want it.

## Orangescrum vs Jira FAQ

Is Orangescrum a good alternative to Jira?

For most teams that want Scrum and Kanban without per seat pricing, yes. You get backlogs, sprints, story points, burndown, velocity, and defect tracking, plus time, cost, and resource planning in the same product. If you are deep in Confluence and Bitbucket, or your process depends on specific Marketplace apps, Jira is probably still the right answer.

What happens to Jira Data Center?

Atlassian closed new Data Center sales to new customers on 30 March 2026. Existing customers can buy expansions and renewals until 30 March 2028, and full end of life is 28 March 2029, after which instances become read-only. The 2028 date is the one most teams miss, because it caps growth two years before the lights go out.

What is the best self-hosted alternative to Jira Data Center?

Orangescrum Self-Hosted runs on your own infrastructure, private cloud, or an air gapped network, with agile boards, sprints, unlimited users, and modules Cloud does not have yet such as risk, documents, and releases. It is a current product rather than one being wound down, and migration from Jira is free.

How much does Orangescrum cost compared with Jira?

Orangescrum is a flat monthly price for the whole team: $29 Basic, $69 Pro, $349 Premium, all with unlimited users. Jira Standard is $9.05 per user per month on monthly billing for teams up to 100. At 25 people that is about $226 a month against our $69. The gap widens with every person you add.

Can I migrate my Jira data?

Yes, and we do it for you at no charge. Projects, issues, users, sprints, custom fields, attachments, and comment history are mapped and validated with your team before cutover, with a sandbox run first.

Does Orangescrum support Scrum properly?

Yes. Product and sprint backlogs, sprint planning with story points, sprint boards, burndown, and velocity, all built from real sprint data. Sprints and the agile framework are on the Cloud Pro plan and above, and included in Self-Hosted.

What does Jira do better?

Three things honestly. Its integration with the rest of the Atlassian suite, the depth of its field and workflow scheme customisation, and the size of its Marketplace. If any of those is central to how you work, that is a real reason to stay.

Is there a free version?

Two. A free forever cloud plan for one project and one user, and the Community Edition, which is free and open source under AGPL with no limit on users or projects. Jira's free plan allows up to 10 users, which is more generous than our free cloud tier but has no self-hosted equivalent.
